Historical Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes
Darlowo is a small seaside town on the
Baltic Coast and what can probably be described as its highlight is the
Castle of Pomeranian Dukes. From the tower you can enjoy extensive views
over the town and the local countryside. Its original interiors house
the museum of Darlowo's history, and it includes many interesting items
such as paintings, sculpture, furniture, weapons, objects made from
amber, maps and much else. Beautifully restored, the museum gives one
insight into those past times.
The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes is
the only Gothic castle located on the coast of the Baltic Sea in Poland.
The castle's formation is close to that of a square, with a tower
measuring 24 metres in height. The castle's construction began in 1352
and was built during the reign of Bogusław V and Elżbieta - daughter of
Casimir III the Great. Although this was only a secondary residence of
the House of Pomerania, the castle was enlarged and modernised in the
fifteenth and sixteenth century, becoming a worth royal residence.
