Râșnov is a town in Brașov County, Romania with a population of under 16,000.
It is located at about 15 km from the city of Brașov and about the same distance from Bran, on the road that links Wallachia and Transylvania.
It is possible this name is derived from Slavic "žrŭnovy", meaning (village or valley) "of the mill". In the 14th century, German documents used the name Rasnov, but the modern German name, Rosenau, is based on a popular etymology, being influenced by the German word "Rose".
In Râșnov a citadel was built around the year 1215 by the Teutonic Knights and it was mentioned for the first time in 1331. The citadel was conquered only once in its history, around the year 1600 by Gabriel Báthory.
In 1856, the Roman fort of Cumidava was discovered near the town.
In 2002, the Râșnov Citadel and surroundings were used during the shooting of several scenes from the American film Cold Mountain.

Rasnov Fortress (Romanian: Cetatea Rasnov, German: Rosenauer Burg) is a historic monument and landmark in Romania. It is situated in Rasnov, Brasov County, in the immediate vicinity of Brasov.
The citadel was
built as part of a defence system for
the Transylvanian villages exposed to outside invasions. A decisive
aspect for building the citadel on the actual location was the route of
the invading armies which were coming from the Bran pass and were
passing through Râșnov, on their way to Burzenland. The only chance of
survival for the inhabitants of the area, inclusively
from Cristian and Ghimbav, was the refuge inside the citadel. Compelled
to stay there for decades, the people of Rasnov and the nearby villages
turned the fortification into a dwelling. (wikipedia.org)
The medieval fortress is supposed to be built in 1211–1225, in the time when the Teutonic chevaliers ruled Barsa County. After the crusaders have left, the wooden fortress was rebuilt or transformed into one made of stone.
