Powderham Castle

Powderham was built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay, it was created as a family home. The house is centred on the 14th- and 15th-century thickly-walled double-height rectangular building formerly comprising from north to south the withdrawing room, great hall, screens passage and kitchens, which are now represented in the same orientation by the ante-room, Staircase hall, Marble hall and Victorian kitchen.

Adapted from a Kazuo Ishiguro novel of the same name and starring Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins, the award-winning film The Remains of the Day (1993) used many Powderham Castle interiors; the master bedroom, staircase, and sweeping hallway, as well as the music room.
